Raising & lowering an object (2 replies)

I'm planning a project where a stepper raises a hatch cover with a rope and pulley system. It will then hold in place for a period of time then lower it.

I see no problem in raising and lowering it as long as the load is within the capacity of the motor but can a stepper motor control the descent of an an object?
